Cpl. Shawn D. Hensel June 29, 1987 - August 14, 2007
A Soldier

I was that which others did not want to be.
I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do.
I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the thought of eternal loneliness… should I fail.
I have seen the face of terror: felt the stinging of cold fear: and enjoyed the sweet taste of a moments love.
I have cried, pained and hoped… but most of all, I have lived times others would say were best forgotten.
At least someday I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was… a soldier.

Special thanks to Pam Kocher and her students at All Saints Catholic School for the Care Package items and the letters for Shawn's unit serving in Iraq. Thanks also to Lt. Cathi Collins and Danny Farris of the Logansport Police Dept. for donating DVDs for the soldiers to watch. The care package was sent last week. Special thanks to WSAL and the many businesses who sponsored the paper flags that were passed out along the funeral procession route and for their patriotic broadcast during the procession and again on Talk of the Town.

The "Roosters" - a new organization comprised of former Jaycees members who are now too old to qualify for membership in the Jaycees - held a benefit gala on November 3rd at the Knights of Columbus Hall on 17th Street. Over 300 people gathered to pay tribute to Shawn and to honor and remember veterans of all wars. The proceeds from the "Salute to Armed Services" gala established the "Shawn Hensel Memorial Scholarship Fund." It is not too late to contribute to the scholarship fund, contact Ed Wilkinson at 753-2208 of George Franklin of the LPD at 574-870-4793. Special thanks to the Roosters for their hard work in organizing this wonderful event. And a very special thank you to everyone who contributed to the scholarship fund.
